Conference Champion: Alabama
SEC Coach of the Year: Dan Mullen- Look for Dan Mullen to continue his success, he
is accustomed to have, at the University of Florida. When he arrived at
Mississippi State in ’09 he inherited a below average, under achieving roster.
In his nine-year tenure in Starkville, he essentially brought the program back
to relevancy. Now, Coach Mullen goes to his dream job with a great amount of
young talent on the depth chart. Included in this above average roster are two
former five-star quarterbacks (Felipe Franks, Emory Jones). If Dan Mullen can
use his magic quarterback touch with either of these guys, like he did with Dak
Prescott, Tim Tebow, Alex Smith, and Nick Fitzgerald, the Florida Gators will
be in for a much needed bounce back year.
SEC Offensive POY:
Tua Tagovailoa- While the Hawaiian native doesn’t even have the starting
job yet, he is arguably the most talented quarterback Nick Saban has ever had;
which isn’t saying much but fuck, that’s not the point. The point is, in nine
games last year, Tagovailoa threw for 636 yards and 11 touchdowns on 49
completions and added 133 yards and two scores on the ground. Not to mention 3 of
the touchdowns were in the national championship to bring the Tide back to win.
Yes, he did all this as the backup. God only knows what he’s capable of doing
with the starting job this year
SEC Defensive POY:
Devin White- First team all SEC junior linebacker Devin White posted a
remarkable 10.2 tackles per game last year. He was the one bright spot in what
was otherwise a season of huge disappointments for the tigers. If it wasn’t for
Roquan Smith’s historic 2017 season, Devin White could potentially be going for
back-to -back Defensive POYs.
SEC Coach on the hot seat: Ed Orgeron- LSU fans and boosters expect to compete for a
national title every year, as they should. They have all the variables it takes
to win money, recruiting, and a passionate fan base. With this being said, 9-4
just won’t cut it. If the Tigers have another mediocre season in 2018, it
wouldn’t surprise me if the program starts to look in another direction in
terms of head coach.
