Conference Champion: Clemson
ACC Coach of the year: Dabo Swinney – It seems as if you could
make an argument to give Dabo Swinney this award every year. And if Dabo takes
the tigers to their 4th straight playoff -which most people,
including myself believe he will- he is a lock for ACC Coach of the year yet
again.
ACC Offensive POY: Ryan Finley – In a conference with very
few proven starters at the quarterback position, Ryan Finley is the exception. The
redshirt junior, Ryan Finley is coming off of one of the best seasons in N.C
State history in which he threw for 3,514 yards. Finley returns with nearly all
of his weapons back including one of the top wide receivers in the country,
Kelvin Harmon. However, on the defensive end of the ball key losses like
Bradley Chubb, B.J Hill, and Justin Jones will hurt the Wolf Pack tremendously.
While N.C State’s defense takes a step back in 2018, look for Ryan Finley to
pick up the slack and make a real case for the Heisman.
ACC Defensive POY: Christian Wilkins- Clemson’s defensive
line has the potential to be something truly special this year. With 3
potential first round draft picks returning (Christian Wilkins, Clelin Ferrell
and Austin Bryant) opposing quarterbacks will dread playing in Death Valley.
The star power Clemson’s defensive line provides eliminates the option to
double-team a player who otherwise would be. Christian Wilkins is productive
even when he is being double teamed; it will be intriguing to see what he is
capable in a one on one battle in the trenches.
ACC Coach on the hot seat: Bobby Petrino – Replacing the
most dynamic quarterback college football has ever seen will be an enormous
challenge for Bobby Petrino in 2018. It will seem even more unattainable with a
defense that resembles the St. Mary School for the blind. Louisville struggled
to be competitive when they had a human cheat code at quarterback these past
couple years. To say they will struggle without Michael Vick 2.0 at quarterback
would be an understatement. I’d be shocked if Bobby Petrino still has a job at
the end of the year.
